Umea was named Sweden's best sport city in 2018.
Welcome to the progressive city of Umea. With its 125,000 inhabitants, Umea is the largest city in northern Sweden. Umea University with some 35,000 students from all over the world contributes to a unique, creative vibe in Umea. In 2014 Umea was appointed European Capital of Culture, and in 2018 it won the prestigious title Sweden’s best sport city for its extensive work with developing exceptional conditions for a wide range of sports. The citizens take great pride in being role models when it comes to gender equality and sustainable development.
Umea has a long history of being a cultural city with an edge. Here you will find unique museums, world-class opera, top restaurants, great shopping – activities for all to enjoy. The city’s pride and number one hockey club, IF Bjorkloven, became Swedish champion in 1987. Today IF Bjorkloven, just like MODO Hockey, plays in Sweden’s second-highest league, HockeyAllsvenskan. Bjorkloven means birch leaves, and this you will find a lot in this city with some 5,000 birch trees planted alone in the city centre. That´s why Umea is also known as the City of Birch Trees.
