The Independent IIHF Disciplinary Panel has issued a one-game suspension to Slovak forward Kristian Pospisil, for a violation of IIHF Official Playing Rule 124 (Checking to the Head or Neck).
The violation occurred at 06:50 in the 1st period in Slovakia’s preliminary round game against Switzerland on 27 May. Swiss forward Andres Ambuhl comes into possession of the puck in the defensive zone near the boards, at the height of the face-off dot. Coming from behind Switzerland’s net, Pospisil skates towards Ambuhl who has the puck at the boards on the right side of the net.
Pospisil comes with speed, aiming at his opponent and turning into Ambuhl to land his hit. Upon reaching Ambuhl, Pospisil delivers a check with his left shoulder/upper arm directly to the head and neck area of Ambuhl. With his elbow against his body, Pospisil jumps into Ambuhl, and with his shoulder drives Ambuhl’s head down and against the protective glass. Both players fall to the ice. Ambuhl was able to slowly get off the ice without assistance.
Based on all facts ascertained, the Disciplinary Panel determined that, because during the check Pospisil violently drove with an upward movement Ambuhl’s head into the protective glass with his left shoulder/upper arm, Pospisil’s actions were extremely dangerous, reckless and created a serious risk of injury to Ambuhl.
Pospisil will therefore be sanctioned with a one-game suspension and will miss Slovakia’s next preliminary round game on 29 May against Denmark. He will be eligible to return for Slovakia’s preliminary round game on 30 May against Sweden.
The Independent IIHF Disciplinary Panel has also issued a one-game suspension to Slovak defenceman Mislav Rosandic, for a violation of IIHF Official Playing Rule 162 (Spitting).
The violation occurred at 51:44 in the 3rd period of Slovakia’s preliminary round game against Switzerland. In the Slovak defensive zone on the left side of the net, immediately after stoppage of play, Rosandic, while centimeters from Swiss defenceman Jonas Siegenthaler, tilted his head and actively spit in the direction of Siegenthaler, the spit landing on Siegenthaler’s forearm area.
Based on all facts ascertained, the Disciplinary Panel determined that Rosandic, while knowing the close vicinity of SUI #97, tilted his head down and actively spit in the direction of Siegenthaler.
The Disciplinary Panel determined that, while Rosandic may not have had the intent to spit on Siegenthaler, because Rosandic spat in the direction Siegenthaler during the game while knowing Siegenthaler’s close proximity, he spit at Siegenthaler and violated Official Playing Rule 162 (Spitting).
Rosandic will therefore be sanctioned with a one-game suspension and will miss Slovakia’s next preliminary round game on 29 May against Denmark. He will be eligible to return for Slovakia’s preliminary round game on 30 May against Sweden.
