Herning

Herning is the 14th largest municipality in Denmark by population (roughly 87.000 inhabitants). Herning is a young city founded as a marketplace and later as an innovator in textile and manufacturing. The city has developed into a center for dynamic business, culture, art, and sport. Hospitality and service is front and center, as the city welcomes over 1 million guests every year for fairs, conferences, shows, concerts, and sport events.

One of the closest options is Birk (the white city), which offers art and sculptures both indoor and outdoor as well as lovely trails to stroll around. It is a beautiful area to visit during the competition. Some of its most popular attractions are listed below:

  • HEART – Herning Museum of Contemporary Art
An impressive collection of Danish art from the 19th and 20th centuries, including artists such as Asger Jorn and Per Kirkeby. Beautiful surroundings to explore with options to enjoy a cup of coffee or find a souvenir in the giftshop.
 
  • CHPEA – Carl-Henning Pedersen og Else Alfelts Museum
”A fairytale-like spot in the heart of Jutland”. Those are the words Carl-Henning and Else used to describe this museum. The two have painted thousands of paintings and over time either donated to the city or put on display at CHPEA.  
 
  • Elia
A big giant that marks the turn of the millennium and manifests the strength and will power of Herning. Elia is 60 meters wide and 11 meters tall with four pillars representing the four corners of the world. This piece of art randomly ignites and sends an 8,4-meter-high pillar of fire up in the air.
 
  • Biblioteket (the library)

A pearl in the city center.

This place will ravish all bookworms regardless of age, interests, and time available.

There are lots of free activities available, such as MakerSpace (technology and creative lab), inspirational lectures, lounge areas with magazines and newspapers as well as a Coffee Shop providing food and drinks.

Accommodation in Herning:

In Herning, Denmark, the following teams will play: Czechia, Denmark, Germany,  HungaryKazakhstan, Norway, Switzerland and United States of America – starting the 2025 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship on 9 May 2025. Out of the 64 games played at the 2025 IIHF WM, 30 games in Herning – including two quarter-finals.

Herning is a beautiful modern city, which has hosted many big events – including the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Jyske Bank Boxen. With a good infrastructure – short distance from the Airport – but also with a variety of accommodation opportunities – hotels, hostels, B&B’s, holiday houses and camping right next to the arena.
